Food Trip Friday--Sansai

One of the highlights of our Golden Week is the Sansai Matsuri held at my Mother-In-Law's ramen shop--- Sansai by the way is the Japanese wild vegetables, a seasonal, organic and has low-calorie. We went early ( before everybody else does ) to the mountain ( a secret place )to gather wild goodies from nature and yes, we're called as the 'sansai hunters' ^_^ There are lots of sansai found everywhere at the mountain ( some from inaccessible places ) during spring and this year the growth of it is somehow late but was glad that we had harvested all kinds of edible grasses and get them ready for selling for the sansai matsuri. Some city folks went their way all the way here just to buy these wild vegetable delicacies and I tell yah, they all taste good! I had a hard time of harvesting the taranome coz of the thorn that's hurting me whenever I grabbed the branch. Sansai goodies is best to eat as tempura ( sprinkled only with salt is highly recommended), ohitashi ( it is boiled, added sesame paste and soysauce), pickles, etc. You can buy anywhere this seasonal goodies from supermarket or order them at a Japanese restaurant but definetely at a highest price! It's luxurious to to have a feast with all these fresh, wild veggies from nature! And again, another fun and new experience for me!! ^_^
---Kogomi------Zenmai------Warabi--- ---The heavenly Taranome, best for tempura---
---Yama Udo---
---My lunch, Sansai Soba topped with sansai tempura, never mind my beer lol!---
---Sansai, packed and ready for selling---
---Mixed Sansai Tempura, just sprinkle a little bit of salt or you can add directly the salt to the tempura batter. That's how my MIL's way of making her sansai tempura---
---My MIL's Sansai Okowa, it's a seasonal sticky rice with all sorts of sansai mountain vegetables. Not much with savory dashi but more on the natural flavor of sansai and is healthy ---

Golden Week Episode---Sansai Matsuri

It is a tradition at my MIL's ramen shop to held a Sansai Matsuri ( sansai means Japanese wild vegetables and if you don't have any idea of it, you must go back here for my Food Trip Friday entry) during Golden Week ( longest holiday here in Japan ) and just like of last year we went to their place to help and not only us, my Sister and Brother-In-Law are also present. We had our tent set and displayed all sorts of fresh, wild sansai goodies from nature and was packed and ready for selling. Some are tempura-ed and given to costumers who ordered at the omice ( shop ) as service and some are for free tasting. It's a great feeling to see costumers with a smile on their faces! As usual and as expected, tiring but F-U-N!!
Sansai is a seasonal wild vegetables found at the mountainside( that's our bukid of tralala ) and that's why some city folks come over yearly to buy sansai at my MIL's omice. The Sansai Matsuri lasted for 5 days but we helped for 3 days coz we also have to treat the kids since it's a holiday. You can also read our Golden Week Episodes here. ---Kabu, Japanese turnip---

Food Trip Friday--One Coin Lunch

--- Buta no Shoga Yaki---

Ever since my kids started going to school, I have been spending a lot of ME time and that being alone at home now is somehow sad and kinda boring. Walking around the city and going into kisaten ( coffee shops and or cafe restaurants ) is now my fave kind of thing ( next to going to Mister Donuts ) while waiting for the time to pick them up to school. And what's so inviting to go to kisaten is that the meal costs for only one coin! 500 japanese yen with volume and good food, salad then you can have a cup of coffee afterwards. One coin for lunch, ain't that cheap?? ^_^
Photo above is called Buta no Shoga Yaki ( Pork in Ginger Sauce ) It was served with a cup of white rice, pickles on the side, a bed of thinly chopped veggies like cabbage, carrot, onion topped in with pork in ginger sauce and was sprinkled with sesame seeds. The combination of the pork in ginger sauce and the mayonaise is superb and that is how Japanese eat their shogayaki-- with the mayo! ^_^

Wakaba's Observation Day

---Wakaba's name written on her first day of school---

Last two weeks ago, we ( Haruka was tagged along with me ) attended Wakaba's Observation Day at school. It is called ' Sankanbi ' here and it is a day that parents observe a regular lesson at their school and then meet with teachers. We received a detailed schedule of what will be taught in the classroom before the said day. It was my second time to meet some of the parents ( mostly Moms and the first was during Wakaba's Entrance Ceremony ) We entered the classroom and observed at the back with some other Moms. Wakaba that day was trying to impress me--she tried raising her hand and then answered the teachers question and then she faces back towards me and then smiled lol! They sung some songs that I haven't heard before and had some story telling. That day they were asked to draw of something that they like and was given 30 minutes to do so. Some kids draw fruits, cars, etc but Wakaba draws me, Haruka and her Daddy and was very colourful! The teachers asked the kids one by one to say infront of the class of what they draw and after that the kid will point who will do next and I was hearing Wakaba saying ' choose me! choose me! ' LOL! I'll try to get a picture of her drawing when she comes home with it---can't wait to share it all to you! ( forgive this baka oya lol! ) I'm glad I had a chance to observe how Wakaba behave in school and how she operates in a group with her classmates. I have my camera but it's the manner in me that matters and aside from that she's not at preschool ( which was ok at her former school ) anymore and decided not to have pictures of her inside the classroom because the kids might get disturbed during the class ALTHOUGH some of the parents ( mostly the PTA members ) kept on flashing their camera. Here's some of the photos at the school taken after the sankanbi. The Sakura of Cherry Blossoms at their school is in full bloom! Enjoy!
---Wakaba and Haruka---
---Haruka's class at Kindergarten was a half day on the day of her big sisters Observation Day so I have to tag her along with me---
---Walking home with a classmate---
---Sakura, on its full bloom!------Wakaba is enjoying her days at Primary School---
---Beautiful Cherry Blossoms---

Thanks for dropping by! Have a nice day to everybody!
